OK, at noon I took a tissue out of the cute Hummingbird box and a bunch of white stuff fell out -- under my 10x loop it is a lot of white micro fibers, but with some kind of a fine white powder mixed in.

Click on thumbnail for larger pic.

This is the box the tissue came in

I put what I could find of the stuff in a small (2 x 2.5") zip lock bag, using an artist's brush to pick it up

made a couple labels with data to document box and sample

close-up view of the bag and contents -- notice the white powder and the fine fibers, which may be paper, but I have never found this sort of thing and have been using the same brand tissue for many years

It took me a couple seconds after the white stuff came off the tissue to wonder what it was, then collected what I could find -- I did find a couple small clumps after the pic was taken.

The microscopic fibers are probably paper, but the white powder-like particles? Some of the "powder" look sort of fibrous also, and maybe the dust is just rounded paper dust? I don't know where my microscope is stashed, so I can't check out the details.

Oh, yes, before I forget, it is snowing again!

So what should I do?

Take the thing to the police station?

Call the FBI?

Call the handy phone number on the bottom of the box to ask the company if this sort of thing is normal -- and to give them a chance to get some kind of a story together for if and when I take the sample to some authorities?

Hey, I'm not overly upset or scared or anything, but I just find this really unusual simply because it's the first time this sort of thing ever happend. Do I think it could be some terrorist scheme? NO WAY, they aren't that creative!

Email me if you have any ideas about what I should do -- or if this has happened to you when using tissues.

I'm going to shower, and shall check for emails when I am finished.

OK, I just showered, and while the water was washing over my tired mind, I remembered an email that the gal at the West Trenton post office sent me yesterday --

<< Hey Hey Hey;
What's goin' on, of course, we had a problem at work, sat. a carrier went to get the mail out of a mail box, in the plaza where mail box etc. is. and all this white powder came pouring out all over her, what did she do. brings it back to the post office, so we all were held up for about 5 hrs. they block off everything, street, parking lot, newspaper, was there, they finally let us go, we followed them down the street in our cars, they were still working, testing etc. when i left. i have not heard anything, as of yet. work tomorrow? who knows????? never a dull moment. See Ya!!!!!

I replied that there probably isn't that much of the real white powder in the entire US, so it was just some stupid prank -- hey, that is the same post office that started the whole anthrax thing some months ago! Curiously I didn't see mention of this on AOL or hear anything about it on CBS radio, so I guess they determined that it wasn't you know what and decided against shooting the news out before they knew anything.

Anyway, maybe that email got me a little uptight about things and the reason why my always wandering mind questioned the Kleenex stuff??

During the shower I decided that I'm not going to notify the authorities about this -- it sounds way too off-the-wall anyway. But in case I do croak under mysterious circumstances in the next couple days, you all know one potential cause.

Don't bother sending flowers -- they cost way too much and only last a couple days -- get together and try to get my toys for the kids in Iraq project off the ground, and that will be enough to keep my cynical soul from coming back and haunting you all on Halloween!

I had just about forgotten about this page, stashed on another of my web domains, until I received this email --

I had the same thing just awhile ago, two boxes so far! Except it wasn't as thick as yours, mine was very very very thin, like a white dust, and alot of it too. Had to throw away one box already it was so bad.

I have not had the same thing happen since 2003
