GAWD! Halo, my sweetest angel, and I arrived at Sonny's the afternoon of 8 August 2001, after three whole days cooped up in that awful Priority box all the way from Chicago, where we had a wonderful time with Beryl. Luckily Halo and I were able to unzip the plastic baggies we were smothering in and get in some loving during the trip! The only problem was that Sonny was busy doing something else all the time -- and we stayed in the sealed Priority box screaming to get out for another couple days. All of a sudden one of his cats knocked our box off a table and as Sonny retrieved it we could hear him say, "Who the hell is THIS from?" Since he is just as inquisitive as his cats, he pulled the tab opener and out we jumped! Boy, was he surprised -- and we actually got some fresh air after about 2 weeks and saw his Sphynx kitty cats for the first time -- and they are cute as anything - and are they ever warm! During the day they always sit at the window getting all the sun they can soak up, and at night they are always under the covers in bed.
There is so much stuff to see here around the apartment, IF we were careful not to trip over something or start an avalanche of all those boxes he has piled all over the place! We were invited to a German bear wrestling match, which was loads of kewl fun. It was sooooo fake, but Sonny said that wrestling is just a stage show, like any other pure entertainment thingy! The contenders made all kinds of grunts and noises and threw each other all over the ring, but their hairdos never seemed to get messed up somehow -- and I wonder if their claws had protective tips on them or something because if I would do some of the things they seemed to be doing, my opponent would be in shreds!! Click on my Gimpy link to see the pic. I accompanied him to New York on the 18th to pick up a new Macintosh Cube computer he got on eBay. Halo didn't want to come along because she had developed one of her migraines, poor baby! GAWD! You should see Sonny drive! Does he ever look at the speed limit? Everything whizzed by so fast, I just about was able to see the Statue of Liberty as we sped past it! I was hungry as anything when we finally arrived, and luckily he sat at an outdoor cafe - and I just plopped myself right in the bread basket and munched away!
The eBay seller arrived at the same time we did, and they both sat there for a couple hours, devouring some Brazilian specialties and sloshing it down with beer - and I even got to taste some really yummy and chewy cheese pockets. I was getting sleepy and snuck some sips of Sonny's coffee -- matter of fact, I downed the entire cup! He wondered where it all got to, so he ordered another, PLUS one for the road. The guy who sold him the puter wanted to get in on all the action surrounding my travels, so I posed on his shoulder for a pic. Actually I got sort of pale a few times over here with Sonny. I think it was my blood pressure or something? Back at Sonny's place he spent hours setting up the new puter and getting to see all the features. Hey, the guy doesn't hardly ever sleep! Halo and I always get to bed before midnight, waiting for him to crawl in beside us - but he usually seems to take a snooze AFTER sunrise for some reason. I was sort of worried that he might be a vampire or something. Matter of fact, he totally surprised us in bed one night, about 3 in the morning, and we weren't expecting him for another couple hours. So Halo and I were doing our usual thing -- well, you know what I mean -- and he just happened to come in and put the lights on, and there we were! He was nice about it though and just quietly turned the lights off and took a snooze at the computer in the other room -- and he never mentioned it to us. I was just glad he didn't have that camera he carries with him around all the time!
After that embarrassing moment Halo and I decided to go to Hotel Teddington for a day, just for a change of scenery. Boy did we meet a whole bunch of beary interesting new friends there, of all ages and backgrounds! There was this amusement park nearby, and Halo and I went on the Coral Slinger ride. WOWEEEEEE - was it fun! The coral branches spin and turn, and we got soooo dizzy and slung this way and that! They also had this Reindeer Romp ride, and I just had to do that one too because, for some reason, I always liked reindeers. OMG! The beast actually flew up high in the sky, and I could see the planet below us about the size of a basketball! When we got back down on the earth, I was so pale I might have been able to pass for one of those rare Indonesian whitewashed cousins of mine! It sure beat all those roller coasters I enjoy so much! On Sunday, 26 August, I went with Sonny to the flea market. I don't know how he gets up at 5am (actually I don't think he slept at all!) and then works so much to unpack and set up. I was still sleepy, and Halo got another one of her migraines and didn't want to tag along. Anyway, she was all warm and cozy because she had Sonny's cats snuggling up beside her in bed. It was just getting light when we arrived at the market. I was curious about what they have there so I wandered around a little and noticed some Halloween stuff, and I just had to get in the mood for the upcoming fun day! I hope I can get out trick or treating with whomever I am with on halloween night. I really love all those yummy treats, and I will drag along a LARGE duffel bag, ON WHEELS, and hopefully get it filled along the way. With what Halo gets, we should have enough to last us at least a week?
OK, so I walked around for a couple hours, and when the sun came out, it started getting a lot warmer. There wasn't a whole lot that I was interested in on most of the tables -- except some comic books and games, but I have a lot of them anyway. And some of the prices I saw were really a lot higher than Sonny asks for just about the same thing. I guess the other dealers start at a high price so they can keep the people happy thinking they got a bargain when they reduce the price a couple dollars, crying about how they wish they could do more but it's only a couple cents over what they paid for the stuff! Poor Sonny is so honest he says what he needs to get for his treasures, and they still try to get them for less! A couple times he even told the cheap twits, "Hey, come back tomorrow and it'll be FREE"! By time I got back to Sonny's corner he was fast asleep in the van! All his tables of stuff were just sitting there with some people grazing to see if they could find that little something that their grandma used to have and they liked so much. One guy was looking at the milk crates filled with books, and had already picked out a couple that I was sure he would buy - so I quickly got Sonny up by ringing an old bronze bell he hangs at his spot to wake up potential customers so they buy something instead of just sleep-walking! Boy, is it ever loud! Hey, sometimes it really works! You should have seen how he jumped up! It was soooooo funny! At least, I thought it was! He was sooooo mad he picked up the metal cane he uses to get around with and was about to hit me with it -- but I was SAVED BY THE BOOK GUY! - he asked Sonny if he could have the 50 cent 60-year-old leather-bound book he was interested in, for a quarter! So Sonny used the cane on the guy instead of on me! You wouldn't believe the cheapskates at that place! The rest of the day was about the same thing. I was getting bored, and Sonny went back to sleep -- and we couldn't get out of that inside corner even if we wanted to because all the other dealers have their tables all over the place. Finally about 4pm some of the dealers on the outside of the covered section started to leave, so I helped Sonny pack up and we were happily on our way back to Trenton. OK, after getting back home, Sonny took a nap and Halo and I decided it was time to pack up for our next stop. GAWD, he didn't get up until the next morning! I think he was still mad about the bell thing or something because he hardly said a word. He had this silly grin on his face as he prepared a third class accommodation for Halo and I on the Priority Express to Minnesota and an exciting stay with Sybil. She seems like such a really nice lady, and I bet her kids will go bonkers when we get there. As a matter of fact Sonny then sat me on the old mailing box and made me promise I wouldn't say anything nasty about Trenton, or he would feed me to Bernie, his ball python! Boy, was I scared!
I told him that we honestly enjoyed our visit, and gave him a big bear hug -- and that really did the trick! I even saw a tear in his eye as he wrote out the label and everything. Was it fun? I'll say -- and eclectically different. Wahhhhhhhhh - I don't want to get stuffed back into that baggie again! At least use a bigger one so Halo can keep me warm (hehe) on the way to MN. Hasta luego, Sonny, and thanks for being such a nice host. SMOOCHES!! Your pal forever,
