Kardas Award

1998 - 2008

10th Anniversary

* RECIPIENTS *

I carefully read the corresponding nomination document, and visited and evaluated each web site strictly according to the guidelines posted on the nomination page.

After having been nominated for

The Kardas Award For Internet Creativity

since 1998, the following 27 winners have met the criteria for inclusion on this AWARD page.

My heartiest congratulations are extended to the following personal cyber sites. Their creators will now present themselves to you and, in their own words, introduce us to their exceptionally unique masterpiece of web design. Keep in mind that over the years some web sites change URL or, perhaps, even disappear for any number of reasons -- it is possible that one or more of the following links are no longer valid. Several web sites appear more than once because changes made after their first award merited one of the later ones

 2008 WINNERS

27. "I think we probably uploaded our first websites around the same time ... 1996?" [yes, we were among the first to realize the importance of the Internet for communicating our interests to others worldwide -- it is amazing how both of our web sites have evolved over the years while many others have since disappeared! ]

"Egads, my site has grown in so many directions over the years that would be hard without it sounding like a grocery list but I will try:

"Feline Central! Tons of cat photos, a cyberclub for cats & cat lovers, free animal welfare graphics, our visits to the Peace Plantation Animal Sanctuary, a feline healing circle & memorial page, the Literary Cat Bookstore, cat inspired jewelry, art & posters, a tribute to Cats the musical and awards for feline-friendly sites. Plus info on meditation, angels, spirit guides, the Egyptian Cat Goddess Bast and Maneki Neko, the lucky beckoning cat. And I'd also have to add that there are rather large sections on The Beatles collectively and individually, Stevie Nicks, swing music, online money making opportunities, drumming circles and costuming, and home to quite a few webrings having to do with most of those subjects LOL. CatAnna"

KEYWORDS - cats, animal welfare, free graphics, feline memoriaal page, cat books, The Beatles, Stevie Nicks, swing music -- and MORE !

26. I took it upon myself to nominate my high school in Philadelphia for the first Kardas Award of 2008 -- last year they celebrated the 50th year of the first graduating class, of which I was a member -- I missed the half century class reunion and hope, God willing, to be able to attend the 55th -- I do have a profile page on their web site, including several photos of me through the years and my varied activities since I graduated

23. "For many years I dreamed of starting a center for self improvement through a more natural living style than most people seem to be able to enjoy in this modern age of processed foods, air and water pollution, and the apparent inability to understand how easy it really is to make a change for the better. They sense that something is missing, but they cannot figure out the reasons nor eliminate them.

My life has improved remarkably in the decade since I actively started realizing what was missing and began making changes in my own life. It resulted in the founding of Body & Sol -- my aim is to help others improve their lives without resorting to gimmicks and artificial means.

My web site is still in its infancy. As I continue on my personal quest, I hope to improve and complete my web pages by adding more useful free information and guidelines for acquiring a more positive life style for a healthier tomorrow for themselves and for society in general."

KEYWORDS - Natural Living, health, nutrition, body - mind, meditation, exercise, self help, Boynton Beach (Florida), weekly meetings

Now my site is over 80 hand made html pages. I only use the lowly word pad. At my site you'll find stories about Pirates, Pilgrims, Puritans, Pioneers, Famous Entertainers, Adventurers, Authors, Poets, and more. This site is rich with history from every period, including several wars.

"Yes I do use a Mac. I use Photoshop to clean up the scanned slides (removing specks of dirt) and to resize to something suitable for emailing or for the web. I shoot a Nikon F5. I like to shoot nature and macros mostly of glass. I got a camera about tens years ago and have studied under Joe Miller, my mentor and Freeman Patterson his mentor.  2003 WINNERS

18. "Sherry's Collectible Treasures is owned, designed and maintained by Sherry Smith, LMT (a Licensed Massage Therapist for 25 years) in Sarasota, FL.

"I knew absolutely nothing about creating a website until I began collecting Beanie Babies as a hobby. I quickly learned how to navigate the websites of others to complete my own collection and did so in record time. What a fun challenge !

"In 1997 with my own collection completed, I realized that if I could create my own website, I could actually operate a small collectibles business generating additional income to support my family. I sure couldn't afford to have a high-priced designer do it for me. So, I learned and learned and learned how to do it myself.

"Over time, my first webpage turned into a very large collectibles site, including mini-sites for my natural health care business and a number of other personal enterprises.

"I believe my site is unique because of it is easy-to-read and navigate, it has the theme of relaxing on a Florida beach with swaying palms, and there is soothing music on every page.

"It is a lot of work, yet it is such a rewarding accomplishment."

[NOTE: I have followed the progress of Sherry's web site since she started it, and am very proud to include her among my Award winners for the second time!]

KEYWORDS - Beanies, Attic Collectibles, artist teddy bears, holistic health , massage therapy, antiques, sports collectibles, fun

Its creators are citizens of different countries, spanning the globe, bringing a true global perspective to education.

"We believe that imagination is the key to learning. Teachers can teach, but learning comes from within. Our goal is to spark the flame that will lead young and old to pursue learning as an adventure through imagination. There is an unending universe of learning opportunities. Every bit of knowledge gained will undoubtedly lead the learner to new levels of wondering, new questions, new adventures."

"All children deserve loving homes and all our attention and support, no matter where they are born. The United States Child Protective Systems have become a disgrace to the individuals who began this fight against child abuse in order to help children.

14. "I began work on my website a few months ago, when I first started looking into weight loss surgery - or more specifically, "Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass".

"When I first began to research this "drastic" surgery, I found myself wondering, "Why in the WORLD would someone want to do such a thing to themselves?" The more I searched the web for answers, the more I began to believe that this surgery might be an answer to MY problems. I found myself reading every single web page I could find - the most helpful were the personal sites which detailed other people's experiences with being overweight and the surgery which saved their lives. I decided to begin a site that would detail my own journey to "The Other Side".

"I am not an expert in HTML, nor do I profess to be a computer genius. I simply wanted to have a place where I could share my experience as it unfolds, in the hope that it might be an inspiration to others who are on a similar journey in their lives. I have found that it is also extremely therapeutic for me - an added bonus! When I become frustrated, I read back over the notes I have left behind and realize how far I've come and what has been accomplished. My surgery will take place on May 19th, and I look forward to it with a mixture of excitement and utter terror! ;)"

10. "I have just fulfilled a long-time dream of creating my own web graphics. I received a scanner & Paint Shop Pro for Christmas! The name of my graphics site is Ivy's Graphics-I love ivy and have it all over my house. I designed my own background to reflect that. I also designed my own logo and buttons, too. I wanted a soft feeling to the site, soft lavendar, sage and yellows.

"I have a variety of backgrounds w/borders and a few page sets that I'm still working on. I offer Romantic, Native American, Floral, Country, and Assorted backgrounds plus a page dedicated to my son, Brian, which reflects his love of boats. I also have a country page set which is dedicated to my friend Kelly, who passed away yesterday after a long battle w/breast cancer-she was only 33.

9. "The Beanies UK website is very "young" at the moment, with only three tender months under its belt, but we feel that it is now coming into its own.

"The sites creation was prompted by a love of collecting Beanie Babies and the fact that there is a lot of knowledge out on the web, but not necessarily all in one place, that is why we as collectors came up with Beanies UK.

"Unlike a lot of sites it is not there as a tool to sell our own Beanies, it is information only, non profit making and hopefully provides a useful service to the visiting public. We offer people the ability to ask us questions about Beanies, to trade their Beanies on a trade board and also try to find Pen Pals. The site also includes competitions, information on all Beanies, and recently Beanie Buddies, information on fake Beanies, variations, town listings, internet store listings and any other information we think would be useful to visitors.

"We have taken the task of setting up such a website as a learning experience, in supplying such information we have a lot of times needed to investigate the information first and ensure that the information is reliable.

"The site has daily updates to keep all users informed of Beanie goings on. so is slowly growing more and more.

"At the end of the day we hope that the site brings enjoyment to visitors and helps them gain information which they never had before visiting."

KEYWORDS: Beanie Babies, Beanie Buddies, Beanie Competitions, Beanie Information

8. "My website is called Liz's Beanie Attic. I think it is creative beacause I am not just SELLING beanie babies, I am giving info on them. I also have a section about wolves there. I made this website because I love beanie babies and I really love wolves and want to protect them.

"I don't really think it's the most original site, but I think it is a good one. I have a contest and in the contest I am giving out a hand-made beanie baby picture frame. I have a guestbook and a chatroom also, but that isn't unusual.

"My photo section includes several photos I have downloaded but I could not find any beanie ones so I used unicorns and they are very very cute. I added a comment on each one.

"I am 11 years old and I created this site about 2 weeks ago. I only really have one page, except for the chatroom, guestbook, links, and photos."

Liz's Beanie Attic

KEYWORDS : Beanies, Wolves, Unicorns, Delightful and Refreshing

7. "I have done alot of backgrounds. They are all free, and I have put alot of effort in each and every background I have made. I have a wide selection of backgrounds that should appeal to most. I have also kept things very simple and organized. I hope you feel the same as I do about my site.

"You will find some beautiful angels, some mythic creatures like Unicorns, floral, woodland creatures, and some pertaining to children."

6. "I bought the domain name late last summer and began researching and saving many graphics and animations in preparation for the actual work of putting it together. I knew nothing of the actual process till I loaded Microsoft Front Page on my computer and actually put it to use by experimenting.

I didn't actually have the webpage up and on the web till around the first week of October. My main objective in doing this is to entertain and inform family members and do the same for friends and mail list friends I've met over the last couple of years via the Internet, as we all share common interests. This has turned into an extremely interesting and educating hobby for me and is an outlet for my creative side as well. I have enjoyed all the time (it has been extremely time consuming) I have put into it, and it is gratifying when other people have let me know how much they have enjoyed seeing it."

Nancy's Site

KEYWORDS : Cats, Attic Treasures, Beanies, dolls, cross-stitching, samplers

 1998 WINNERS

5. "My site started in June 1997, and has grown to be known throughout the world wide web. It is mainly about Beanie Babies, those cute, adorable, stuffed bean bags that every child asks their Mom for. It has a good Beanie Baby traders list, a Beanie Baby link page, and much, much more!

"I work on my site and make it better and better day by day. I get lots of compliments, and that also make me feel good about my site; that isn't unwanted on the web.

"'True Craftsmanship'- For my good traders list, I do not use an alphabetizing program. I do everything by mind. I also type all of the e-mail addresses in -- without using copy & paste, because my provider won't let me paste it in."

ANNA'S SITE

KEYWORDS : Beanie Babies, Fun, Good Traders List

4. "I've never collected anything previously, except perhaps dust. About two years ago, I became a 'collector'.

"A little over a year ago, I put up a large website using one of the free page sites. I knew absolutely nothing about how to make a web page, so the free sites were the only workable alternative. They were fun, but way too limited for what I began to envision accomplishing.

"I saw my collectibles and growing knowledge as a way to help others build their collections. So I set about doing my own research. As I became more educated, I knew I wanted to help other collectors learn more, too.

"Since that time, I have put together a very informative site for serious and casual collectors. I believe my site contains the most comprehensive information on Beanie Baby tags and the Princess Beanie currently available on the Web. There is also a great deal of valuable and fun collection information on the Ty Attic Treasures Collection. Very detailed collector Lists for both Beanies and Attics, too.

"As my site started to become a popular collectible site, I knew I needed to get serious about my web presence or go home. I purchased my own domain and went to work putting together a more professional looking site. Then, I got the site bug. Although maintaining a site is very time consuming and an incredible amount of work, the joy of creativity and accomplishment are unmatched.

"I developed a theme which incorporates my community and my profession as a Licensed Massage Therapist. The beach seemed a great place for a Treasure Hunt, and so it is !"

KEYWORDS : Antiques, Attic Collectibles, Beanie Babies, Natural Healing, Other Plush Collectibles, Relaxation and fun on a palm laced beach!!

3. "I started my website with expage.com which is a great place to start when you know nothing-like me! After awhile I was frustrated because I could not use any other graphics but their own nor could I use photos. I found AOLPress which is easy (even for me) and which also allows one to do whatever one chooses...ah! artistic liberty!

"I have researched 100's of graphic websites and have found some amazing art and also some very nice people. My next project is to develop a graphics directory so I can share my great find with others.

"I love maintaining a website...home with children, it allows me some expression and contact with the outside world! When the going gets tough...I go to my computer!

"It's truly my haven. I also maintain The Carol Jean Cancer Foundation website which is linked to The 1st Annual Ty Collectibles Convention's website. That is a personal mission for me...I'd like the world to know they exist and the wonderful things they do.

Mary Beth's Corner Store

2. "I would like to nominate Gus Gonzalez's Unofficial American School of Madrid site for your award . In addition to meeting all the requirements for your award, Gus updates his pages constantly.

"He had photos from the November 20th ASM Miami Happy Hour mini-reunion processed and scanned in within 4 days of the event! He posts submitted articles and newsletters usually within 24 hours of receipt. He has made it possible for people who had not heard or seen from each other in 30 years, connect with one another electronically and now through mini reunions.

"In your own words: " WOW, I don't believe that I found a LINK to some of the most memorable teaching years in my career!! Recuerdos a todos!! Sonny ". This has been happening to people all over the country, all over the world. Gus is most deserving of this award!! He originally set up the pages with Robert Passmore but he has been maintaining them and changing them alone ever since. I have mentioned a few "wishes" and a few days later they have become a reality at his site.

"By the way, I have never met Gus. I graduated from the American School of Madrid in 1969 and he graduated in 1983. His site has awakened wonderful memories for hundreds of ASMers (and former teachers). Receiving this award from a former teacher of the American School of Madrid would blow him away!"

Sincerely,

Michelle (Fearey LaGue) Mock

1. "I began making a webpage back in early 1996, when our little town got it's first internet provider. The webpage began very small, as I did not know the in's and out's of HTML, the language necessary to build webpages. The main focus on the webpage I was trying to get across was a personal one, putting information about where we lived and who we were as well as some of our likes and dislikes. What had started as a simple webpage, eventually turned into several webpages with the addition of more and more pictures and information. I even had to change webpage hosts because my project was getting too large.

"Today, we have a webpage devoted to a beanie baby contest for children with it's own automated entry page, a page with information and pictures of my children and even a page for our pets. We all have a wonderful time taking pictures and learning to upload them onto our webpages. One of the greatest benefits of having the ability to put pictures on webpages, at least for us, has been the fact that we now have permanent reminders of some of our pets who have either disappeared or who have gone on to new homes after rehabilitation.

"Future goals we have for the website are to enhance the HTML and maybe even learn a little JAVA. I have also been experimenting with making animated pictures for the website, and have actually made one; the multicolored Peace bear on the index page. I think having this webpage has allowed my family to meet a huge variety of wonderful folks and to learn more about computers and what they can do for us.

"The best rewards we've gotten have been the letters from children who have expressed their sincere thanks for our contest and the praise from other surfers on the family content of our website. I get many letters from parents who have thanked us for putting a safe, interesting webpage up for their children to safely view. Yet, nothing compares to the letters we receive from the winners of our beanie baby contests, they are always so thankful and happy. It is our hope to continue to provide these contests for as long as we can, in honor of the generous people I met on the internet last Christmas, who helped us in our time of need.

"Thanks for the chance to let others know about my website, we are proud of it and hope more and more people will visit soon."
